Queen Mathilde of Belgium is the wife of King Philippe, who ascended the throne following the abdication of his father, King Albert II, on 21 July 2013. She is the first Belgian-born Queen consort of the Belgians.
In the book Spinners by Donna Jo Napoli, which is a retelling of Rumplestiltskin, the child Rumplestiltskin demands from the queen is named Mathilde. I think I like this spelling better than Matilda, though they're pronounced the same.
Mathilde was the returning lover in the Jacques Brel song of the same name. Guy de Maupassant also used the name for the foolish main character in his short story The Necklace.
She was known for her love affair with author Colette.
