"Marigold" is derived from "Mary's Gold", and the plant is associated with the Virgin Mary in Christian stories. Perhaps that is why the symbolic meaning of the Marigold flower is "pain and grief" - alluding to the pain and grief of the Virgin Mary? That's my hypothesis. I can't think of any other reason for such a happy-looking flower to have such a dreadful meaning.I like this name, and I think Goldie would be a cool nickname. Or Margo, or Maggie, or any nickname for Mary, like Molly, May, Marion, etc.

In the language of flowers, Marigold means "sorrow".
