One of my absolute favorites, so beautiful. It has an eternal quality to it that defies time and trends. I always think of the song from West Side Story: ‘Maria, say it loud and there’s music playing/ say it soft and it’s almost like praying’.

Maria is such a lovely, mellifluous name with very feminine, classic, and wholesome vibes. It has been one of my favorites since I was a child. I understand why it's stood the test of time, still being globally common today - it's gorgeous yet simple, easy to spell and pronounce, and of course has religious significance to Christians because of the Virgin Mary. It's not TOO common in the U.S. (it's hovered around #100 on girl name charts for the past several years), so I would definitely consider naming a daughter Maria.
Just so beautiful and eternal. I also love Anna, Jane, Eleanor, Lucy, Josephine, Alice, Catherine, Elizabeth these kind of names make me think of the sister from Little Women because they're all international and understated but at the same time classic.

Be at least a tiny bit original with your names I beg of you, there are already enough Marias in this world.
My name is Maria and it suits me perfectly and its meaning is the best part of it. Meaning "the one who is loved by God" and nothing can compare to that. I am blessed and grateful that I was given my beautiful name. It's as beautiful as a sunflower in full bloom and its meaning is respect.

Way too common! While I love this name, I would rather use something like Mariana. It's just as beautiful but not incredibly common.
Lovely name, a true classic. The thing that puts me off using it for baby girl is that it's insanely popular, particularly in religious countries and with religious communities such as Hispanics and Travelers.

I like even Mary. It's so beautiful, classy, sweet, and lovely. ❤❤.
"How do you solve a problem like Maria? How do you catch a cloud and pin it down? How do you find the words..." I'm stopping there. I really love the Sound of Music, which reminds me of this name. This name is so whimsical and pretty!
It's a lovely, timeless name that suits girls of all ages and of all personalities that you pretty much can't go wrong with. It might technically be one of the most common names on Earth, but I actually don't know very many Marias, especially when compared to the number of people I know who are named, say, Jennifer or Sophia.
Maria is a beautiful name! I can't consider a name overused, since everyone has their own resemblance of a name: I think it resembles a sweet but sometimes impulsive person that takes everything to their heart.
Contrary to what some comments have conveyed in their opinions, I beg to differ on this name being considered “plain” or “ugly”. In my humble estimation, Maria is a graceful, charming and evergreen moniker that never will sound dated by fashion trends.

The most overused name in the entire world. Nothing unique or beautiful whatsoever. If you want your kid made fun of or to feel like they are exactly like everyone else with no unique qualities of any kind, name them Maria.
My friend has a daughter on a video game named Maria. She just really liked the name for some odd reason. It is pretty and elegant though. Plus I love that it has royalty.
A beautiful, elegant name that has beautiful history... or maybe wicked, I have no idea.

Such a beautiful beautiful name but ohh soo popular.

J'adore Maria! A timeless classic though seriously overused in some parts of the world. Maria would suit a little girl, teenager, woman and sweet old lady. Mary and Marina are similarly beautiful and timeless in their own ways.
I absolutely love this name, considering it's the name of my aunt/family friend, but the meaning does not suit the Maria, I mean "bitter"? Does NOT fit my aunt at all. We also call her Mimi instead of Maria.

Love this name, hey anonymous user, my actual aunt's name in Maria too, and yes it does mean "bitter", or "bitter seas" but it is one of the best names in my opinion!
This is a beautiful, timeless name, with the adorable nicknames of Marie, Ria and Mia. It can work in so many languages and countries, and is an amazing name on any age and personality. I love it pronounced as either ma-ree-a or the old-fashioned way of ma-rie-a. People who have this name are fortunate, assuming they don't dislike it. If I ever had a daughter, then I would strongly consider naming her Maria.
Well, this is the 2nd most common first name in the world. At the same time, I can see why. It's a classic, it's universal, well known, it sounds pretty, Maria is easy to spell and pronounce. It still manages to sound fresh even after years of use. Maria seems more vibrant and lively than plain old Mary. Mary is also pretty, but I think it's boring.
In my honest opinion it’s overused as hell (Especially in Hispanic cultures) but it’s honestly not bad.

This name is so historical, elegant and timeless, I love it. A bit overused in some parts of the globe but I believe this name will never truly die out. What a stunning name. The only problem I have with it is that it might not be 100% suitable for a small child, but I'm sure they eventually grow into it. Everyone I've met with this name has been so kind so it's left a great impression.
Well, Maria is good name, classic, has quality, history, however, it is so popular, probably one of the most popular names for woman. So common, but still alright.
Maria in my Latino culture it is WAY overused. Half my female relatives are named Maria with a differed middle name: Maria Cecilia, Maria Isabel, etc. I was named Maria Stephanie. Funny thing is that to avoid confusion, we all go by our middle names. So everyone knows me as Stephanie, but on paper I am Maria which always made things confusing in school. ("Huh? I thought you said your name was Stephanie.") Wish my parents had reversed it and named me Stephanie Maria.
As a young male I resented being given the middle name Maria, along with my two sisters. Living in an anglo-saxon society I kept it a secret and was always worried about people finding out and being teased. Growing older I became accustomed to it and could see how it might appeal to some people but I would never impose such an affliction on a son of mine when there are so many nice male names from which to choose.
Maria is a beautiful girl's name and has survived the test of time.

I love it! Very classic. Mary, Maria, Marie, and Mari are all nice. I also like Miriam and Myriam. Also, just so you know, Maria is usually spelled María (with an accent mark) in Spanish-speaking countries, as well as in Galicia and Iceland. Maria is popular in Latin America, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Southern France (Catalan and Occitan-speaking areas), Greece, and several other places. And according to forebears.io, Maria is the most common name in the world, with 66,032,598 people bearing this name. Simple, short, sweet, and easy to pronounce. Lovely! :D.
Very beautiful. Fits the personality of all kinds of girls. Love it. Maria is a girl name in Germany, and I've never heard of a boy named Maria in my entire life. MARIA IS FOR GIRLS.

I believe Maria is a very pretty name. I get lots of compliments on it. But it’s pretty common I wish it wasn’t as much, so I mostly go by “Ria” since I think that is just easier and short. It’s just weird to have a name where at least 10 people you know have it. But otherwise I wouldn’t want ever to change my name, I just love it! ❤️.
I don’t think this name could suit a boy in America. While Maria could be unisex in more Hispanic countries like Mexico, Spain, or Italy, it’s considered strictly feminine in English Speaking counties such as here in the United States, same with the Polynesian unisex name Moana. They’re both feminine sounding names particularly in America. I love Maria for a GIRL. It’s a very classy and elegant name. A perfect relative for the girl’s name Marie. Although you could name your children (boys & girls) whatever you want especially in such a free country like America, the freedom to name males anything out of all the name books isn’t exactly 100% accurate. You COULD name a girl James, but you couldn’t get away with naming your son Kate, anywhere.

Maria is an absolutely lovely name FOR A GIRL. Anyone who thinks it is a masculine name is weird. Anyone who calls their son Maria is evil. It just sounds so feminine and girly. Girly names are really better than boyish names for a girl. Maria. It's just so lovely. Maria.
I think Maria is a name that will be always popular. I think it's an easy name to pronounce. Here in Italy there are a lot of women with this name.

My daughter is Maria Frances Theresa. These are all names of my favorite relatives, but I prayed for a girl, asking the Blessed Mother Mary to send me one, and she did.
Maria is a beautiful name. It also makes a great middle name even if it’s too close to Marie. Perfect name for a baby girl. I wouldn’t name a boy Maria though. It’s all girl to me.
I absolutely love Maria for a girl, only! Maria’s definitely not a boys name AT ALL! It doesn’t sound masculine to me AT ALL! I’ve always associated with female Maria’s and even if there were male Maria’s I would’ve said it sounds better on a girl. It sounds so girly girly! Maybe in other countries, it would sound fine on boys, but in the United States, no, no, no! The boy will be mercilessly teased! I feel sorry for any U.S. boy carrying this name around!

Prettier than Mary, although not quite as lovely as Marie... I also cannot see this name on a boy.

My name is Maria. I think it's a quite nice, classic name. It just feels a bit odd in my mouth, when I introduce myself to other people.
Seems warm and familiar to say, especially when you think of it as Spanish or Italian.

I don't think Maria is masculine. The Virgin Mary is a very female association.

This is my first middle name, it's pretty but I prefer Norah (my 2nd middle name).

Maria was the name of a devastating category 5 hurricane that recently occurred, I expect a significant drop in its popularity, and this kind of ruined the name for me.
Very pretty. It has that extra 'oomph' and old-fashioned flair and spice that Mary and Marie don't, despite how nice those names are. Reminds me of spices and semi-sweet chocolate and violin. It sounds very unique and special even though it's actually very common.
Maria is a sweet-sounding name, perfect for a strong, warm, intelligent and self-sufficient woman. For me, it has German connotations, since I've known several German women named Maria.

Why is this labeled as unisex? If a few dozen girls were unfortunately named Thomas, would the site have that labeled as unisex as well?

I don't really like the name Maria, I don't know it just sounds too fancy or something like that. Sounds more Spanish than English to me. Also I think it's incredibly too common.Although I really really like the variants Marie and Mari. I like the diminutive Maia as well, but spelled "Maya".
My friend's little sister Maria goes by Mia. Mia as a nickname to Maria is much better than Mia as a full name, it sounds really childish as a full name, but Maria is a beautiful name :)

Beautiful name, but every other woman seems to be named this where I live! I do understand that it has religious significance due to being the name of Jesus' mother, and as a Catholic I think that's wonderful. But it's so common...
My name is Maria and I like it. It is used in many countries and my parents are from different places, my father chose this name because he thought it was international. I like it because it has many pronunciations and usages.

Extremely beautiful name, but rather overused. Much better than Mary or Marie though.

Living in the US it's usually thought of as being Mexican but I like to think of the Latin and European origins. As a Catholic it's made me feel particularly attached to the Virgin Mary (since Mary and Maria mean the same thing) I can't imagine having a different name. I've only come across a few women with the same name, most of them were much older than me. I've never had another child in my class with this name. The only bad thing is having people sing whenever they see you or thinking that Marie and Mimi are acceptable alternatives.
My name is Maria. I was named after my crazy Italian nonna, but she's always gone by Mary. I hated my name when I was a kid, because everyone either #1: brought attention on me because they liked my name so much, or #2: they made the mistake of calling me Marie.

There are so many MARIA SONGS! Be prepared to be serenaded a LOT if you go by this name.

Maria is more foreign and exotic than the English form, Mary. Same with Ana vs Anna.
Two of my best friends both have this as one of their middle names and I really like it. It's a bit too religeous for me as a first name but I think it's very nice for a middle name. I also know a few Catholic guys who have this as a middle name and I've always thought that was pretty weird, still, I like the name.
I think this name sounds sophisticated; short and sweet.

I love this name, I think it is beautiful and very lively. I think it is a very sweet name and it is not used very often where I live. I encourage people to use it more. :)
I think this name is very pretty, and there is always the song stating, "My Mariiiiiiiiiiiaaaaa". And also there is the lovely Sound of Music! BUT! It reminds me of Mary. Which you can think of two ways. Hopefully you think of the Virgin Mary who gave birth to our savior Jesus Christ. But then you can think of "Bloody Mary" who killed so many innocent people.

I don't like this name, because nearly all the Marias I know are not very nice to me. I prefer the spelling “Marie” it sounds more Angelic.
I really love my name, here in Australia it is not a common name and that is what I like about it. I wouldn't want to be named something that everyone else is. Although it is a common Spanish name.
I love the name Maria, but I wish people would shed the stereotypical image of a Spanish woman when thinking of it. It's a name used all around the world, people! It was my great-grandmother's name, and when I tell people, they're like "YOU'RE HISPANIC?" (I'm the most Irish looking thing you'll ever come across). And no, I'm not. But I like the name.
My name middle name is Maria, I use it as my first name though since I don't really like my first name. It's an ok name, it's not the best name in my opinion, but it's not the worst either.
A very pretty and classic name for a girl. Much nicer than than Madison, Avery, Trinity and all those other trendy, faddish names for girls nowadays. True, Maria is somewhat overused and common but I've always liked the 'universal' aspect and recognition that it has. I know a girl named this who goes by Ria as a nickname.

My name is Maria. I don't know if I like it, but sounds very sweet, VERY OVERUSED. Something that would make me like it is when I think of characters that I admire that are called Maria. I guess it doesn't have to fit to a certain personality, isolated and all. Various people I know are called Maria and they are very different from each other, one can be religious, graceful, isolated.

Maria is Mary in Spanish and it sounds good in any European language.

Maria is the name of someone unique in their own way - an artist, a dancer, or just someone on the opposite side of the classroom. This name represents beauty from within (or in my best friend's case, from the outside also) and compassion.
My middle name is Maria and I thnk it is a pretty name and it is pasted down my mother's side of the family. Almost all of the girls on my mother's side of the family have Maria as a middle name.

It's a nice name to have, provided you never come across any people who realise it rhymes with a host of embarrasing diseases. And if you don't mind your stubborn family constantly calling you "Marie", then you're laughing.
