Manus derives from the adjective 'Magnus' which, in Latin, means great. The word Manus in Latin does, of course, mean 'hand' (as in manual work etc.) This, however, is not the origin of the name Manus. While magnus means great, maior or major means 'greater' Maximus means 'greatest'.
