I like how formal it sounds. Some of my ancestors used this name too.

Personally I see the name, Maitland as a female name. It can be shorted quite nicely too Mati, Matey, Matie. It would make a lovely name for formal use and simply Mati for short or theirs quite a few other alternatives you could use.

It sounds old-fashioned and geeky in a bad way. It's better to leave it as a surname.
