I knew a girl in my high school that was named this. We all knew her as "MAY-la". At the time I didn't get how that pronunciation came from the spelling Mahala, but now I'm guessing it's just that the first two syllables of the "ma-HAY-la" pronunciation blended together into one "MAY" syllable, just due to the 'h' being lazily pronounced.
Pronounced "mə-HAY-lə".
