Lewis Powell (1844-1865) attempted to assassinate Secretary of State to Abraham Lincoln, William H. Seward. He was an associate of John Wilkes Booth. On the same night of President Lincoln's assassination, Lewis infiltrated Seward's house and stabbed him in the face several times. Seward was wearing a jaw splint from a carriage accident, so he did not die. Powell also severely injured two of Seward's sons, a soldier guarding Seward, and a messenger. He was executed on July 7, 1865 with three others for their conspiracy.
Lewis is the main character in my current favorite movie, "Meet the Robinsons." His design is based on the nameless character in William Joyce's book, "A Day with Wilbur Robinson," who tells the story of the Robinson family in first-person through the eyes of Wilbur's best friend. Disney came up with the name Lewis when they converted the book to a movie.
