Explaining the meaning as a cognate of the same name in another language is useless "information". Leone means lion (the wildcat), regardless of its Spanish counterpart. It is the common noun for it. Lion is, of course, the French translation which is what we use in English there being no known Anglo-Saxon word for the beautiful animal. I don't know its origin for sure although a good guess would be the animal's image was featured on a coat of arms to suggest being fierce and beautiful. It certainly isn't merely a translation of a Spanish name. Italian hardly came from Spanish. Yikes!
