The fifth or so king before Leonidas of Sparta was named Leon. That name is the source of the name Leon, Léon, Leo, León, Leonard, Leonidas, Leonid, Leonti and all of their feminine variants and is indeed the source of the name of the provinces in Spain and Mexico, as the Greeks explored and built temples in Spain long before the Romans got there.
