My friend has this name, I think it's cute. She said a while ago that it's Hawaiian for palm tree? I'm not too sure about whether this is true or not, does anyone know?
It's certainly true that Kiana is the Hawaiian language form of Diana, and that most of the girls who've been given the name since around 1988 when Hawaiian-born exercise expert Kiana Tom became famous can probably claim that derivation. However, most Kianas born in the mainland USA before 1988 received the name as a variant spelling of Qiana, the name of a silk-like fabric invented by the DuPont Corporation. Statistics clearly show that Qiana came first as a regularly used baby name in the mainland USA and that all the myriad spellings used in the African-American community in the 1980s (Keonna, Kianna, Keyana, Keyonna, etc.) are derived from it.
