This name used to be really popular in Germany in the 70s and 80s. It is usually spelled Katja here and pronounced Kuht-ya. I prefer Katia, though. Names ending in -ja (pronounced -ya) used to be extremely popular in Germany in the 80s. Others of that group are Anja, Sonja and Svenja. Recently a new group of -ja names have become popular among them Finja, Fenja, Lenja, Kaja, Maja and Ronja.
While this name is unique in the United States and other English-speaking countries, it is quite common in Russia -- somewhat like Elizabeth or Katie here.
