Hong could also come from Chinese 红 (hóng) which means "red". [noted -ed]
In her autobiographical epic Wild Swans, British-Chinese author Jung Chang writes that Hong can mean "red" or "wild swan" in Chinese.Chang's birth name was Er-Hong (二鴻), meaning "Second Swan". However, as it sounded like the Chinese word for "faded red", she asked her father to rename her something more commanding.
Hong could also mean "red". If this were the case, then it should be used for a girl. I know, I'm Chinese.
