Crybabies in the comments are acting like many names haven't sprung off from random words/things. Wahhh wahhh its welsh culture wahhh wahh have some respect. My wife is named Hiraeth and she has the prettiest name ever. Ill take on all of you at once. Slide.
The word Hiraeth is distinctly about the Welsh people and the longing for Wales / the Welsh culture during and after our culture was forced from us by the English over the centuries. Out of respect and bare human decency, this SHOULD NOT be used as a quirky baby name!
There are very few names I think should not be used, but this might be one. Like the commenter below me mentioned, the word Hiraeth does not just mean a homesickness or nostalgia, but has a very particular connotation in terms of the violent oppression of the Welsh culture—whether a Welsh person living in or who immigrated from Wales would ever think of naming their child Hiraeth isn’t my business, but I think it’s in poor taste to do so if you have no serious connection to Wales.(Of course, it’s important not to blame any children who happened to have been named Hiraeth for that, they didn’t choose it—not that anyone here has done so.)
