Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine (1807-1864) was a Canadian politician who served as the first joint Premier of the United Province of Canada and the first head of a responsible government in Canada in collaboration with Robert Baldwin, from 1842 to 1843.
In Madame Bovary, the porter with a club foot on whom Bovary's husband operates is named Hippolyte. A similarly unfortunate character appears in Dostoevsky's The Idiot with the Russian version of the name, Ippolit.
