From Greek mythology, Hippolyta is queen of the Amazons (an island of warrior women) and assisted Heracles (Hercules for Romans) in one of his 12 labors to get her magic belt. Courtesy of his stepmom Hera, Heracles later killed most of the ladies on the island... but not Hippolyta. Very cool name, very cool origin.
