Hazel is the name of the main protagonist of the 1972 novel Watership Down by Richard Adams (and the subsequent animated renditions of the story). After proving himself to be a cunning chief of rabbits, he gained the honorary suffix 'Rah' (Hazel-Rah).
Hazel Wong, from A Murder Most Unladylike (In America it's Murder Is Bad Manners) I loved this name even before I discovered her, and now I love it even more!

Hazel was the name of a particularly destructive hurricane in 1954. I was a child then and I thought that "Hurricane Hazel" was just a personification of ANY hurricane.

In 'Murder Most Unladylike' by Robin Stevens, the name of one of the detective girls is Hazel. The other one is Daisy, and I think they go well together as twins' names.
Hazel Lavery was a painter and the second wife of the celebrated portrait artist Sir John Lavery. Her likeness appeared on Banknotes of Ireland for much of the 20th century.
Even though it says it's a female name, I can think of two male characters named this: Hazel-Rah is the chief rabbit in "Watership Down", and Hazel Rah (named after him) is a vampire in the story "Vampiru" on FictionPress.

I think this is a lovely name. Sweet for a child, but can be a serious grown up name, too. Look at Hazel Henderson, a British economist with an interest in interdisciplinary economic and political theory and environmental and social concerns.

There are some notable male bearers of the name in American literature. Hazel Motes is the protagonist of Flannery O'Connor's 1952 novel Wise Blood. In John Steinbeck's Cannery Row there is a male character named Hazel. His mother named him under the impression that he was a girl and never changed the name. Before reading that I wasn't aware that Hazel is an odd name for a male. I think the entry should be changed to a unisex name.
There were 3 different Witch Hazels in animation. One from Warner Bro.'s "Looney Tunes", one from MGM and the last one from Disney. (all 3 were voiced by June Foray)
