Cons: It sounds a bit harsh to me. Maybe mellow out the sound with a romantic or floral middle name? Another choice is to use the full name Margarethe or Margarete and this as the nickname.

Nicknames: I'd go with Grey. I'm not at all a fan of the name Gert or the nickname Gertie, but I agree they are usable possibilities.

So precious and pretty. I think it's still usable because, despite being a name from a fairy tale, it's reasonably normal sounding, not like Rumpelstiltkskin. I wouldn't be weirded out if I met a Gretel.
