The placename "Gordon" is found in Scotland and also in France, where it is written "Gourdon". The "don" part is Celtic, or pre-Celtic, and means "hill". The "gor" part is thought to mean "enclosed" (same origin as "garden", "garth" etc). So the whole word means "fortified hill", which corresponds very closely to the places with that name.
