Nice name especially now, it might share a name with a 4th Generation 16-Bit video game console or a chapter in the bible or a prog rock band, but it's actually a nice name.
I actually think it’s pretty, but I wouldn’t use it, mostly because it’s kind of tacky and I can see it becoming dated. It has some good nicknames though, and it’s actually structured like how a name is, being similar to Jennifer, Genevieve, and Alexis.
I like this name! It's unusual, looks strong, serious, just a beautiful name! Genesis, isn't it good? Be proud if you have this name! Class and quality!
Actually my name is Genesis and people call me Ginger because I have red hair. Here are the nicknames people call me: Ginger, Genny, Gen! I love my name!
Honestly, even though I'm not absolutely in love with this name, I do really like the idea of it. I like that it's biblical and that there are several cute potential nicknames, like, Gen, Genny/Jenny, Sis, etc.
It is a nice sounding name but I have trouble thinking of it as a name for a person. Genesis is the model name for my luxury automobile. Along with it being the first book of the Bible confirms it as a non person name for me. However, I will have no "heartburn" over someone using it for their child. I wouldn't do it though.

My daughter is named Gennesis Wayde Nickole. I love this name- not only is she my first child she is my only creation and my beginning on a new life as a mother, she's 17. I'm not religious by any means. I just wanted her to have a unique name. I see the comments about it being a strippers name which I'm okay with some strippers choose beautiful alias'. We do call her Genna though.
Sounds tacky, "kree8tiv", and silly. Also, there's a band called Genesis that I hear frequently, so no, I will not be using this name soon. (also, this has nothing to do with religion).

I'm fine with being made fun of for my name of Genesis because all I get made fun of is for the Bible and I was named from the Bible and I am also disappointed with the negative comments about my name because it makes me feel special to not have many Genesis's in the world.
My name is Genesis! My mom is not in a particular faith although my step dad is catholic he didn't have any say in my name for he was not there when I was born. My mom did not name me after the bible, or the Greek name, or because of the word genitals. This is not a stripper name and to anyone who thought that, shame on you! My mom named me after her favorite character in a tv show, that she used to watch with her mom, that lost the battle to breast cancer, a few years before my older brother was born. All these people putting such negative things really makes me sad. I know many people with my name that are made fun of and bullied, because their name sounds like genitals, a stripper, the bible etc.

I absolutely LOVE the name Genesis! Me and my husband named our first child together (and first daughter) Genesis. She loves her name, and also gets compliments on it all the time. My name was chosen from the bible and I decided to do the same. I am also a Christian and my family as a whole are active members in our church, but I really don't think it matters if you are a religious person or not. We have the freedom to name our children whatever we choose, and if for whatever reason they may choose to change their names, it will be their choice. My child has not been teased because of her name nor do I believe she ever will be, and honestly if you have a problem with the name Genesis, you don't have to name your child this very unique name if do not choose to do so.

I have a name heavily associated with Christianity as well (Trinity), and I wound up being an Atheist. I would have much preferred having at least a more secular name rather than one with such religious ties. Though Genesis, in the end, is actually quite a beautiful sounding name, I hope people wouldn't consider it as you never know what your child may wind up believing.
Lols if a girl called Genesis should grow up an atheist. Sure, the link to the Bible doesn't have to be that obvious and the same with every bearer, but Christianity is the number-one association with this name, I guess.
The biggest crime against this name isn't the fact that it's heavily associated with religion, it's just the fact that it's ugly. It really doesn't sound pretty. If you want to name your daughter something with religious meaning then go for something like Trinity or after a female character from the Bible. Or if you're going for a name with a similar meaning, Aurora means dawn or new beginnings. There are much better options than Genesis.

I have named my daughter Genesis, meaning the beginning of my creation. I really love the name a lot and I want my daughter to have a rare name. Genesis is the best name for every first born.
There are lots of names in the world that may seem weird to anyone not knowing the meaning and story behind them. The only thing that should matter is what that name means to the person/s doing the naming, religious or not, who cares! If you don't like a name, don't use it! But don't bash it either! It may mean nothing to you, but it does to the bearer of the name and the namers. I know a kid named "God". I thought that was the strangest name. I don't know the meaning behind it, but I know I would never name my kid that, and I leave it at that. All I can say is, go with your heart and gut feeling, and just hope that your kid will at least like, if not love, their name. I have three kiddos, they each have a name with a special story behind it, and they LOVE their names. The only thing they've ever questioned is why my girls don't have middle names, they want a middle name. I, on the other hand, hated my middle name. Which might be the subconscious reason I didn't give them one. :D.

There are some names with strong religious connotations, like Evangeline or Gabriel, that I love enough to ignore the relation to religion -- Genesis is not one of them.
Well, I named my daughter Genesis Jolene and I love it. With a name as unique as Ekko I wanted my daughter to have a name that you wouldn't hear everyday. Also, I got pregnant young and I just felt like it was my new beginning, to go from being a teenager with nothing but myself to think of to a mother to a young lady who would look up to me. I think some of the comments are single minded. My daughter is beautiful and the name fits her well.
From a non-religious perspective, it looks like the parents were trying too hard. I get that it means "beginning," but really, who thinks of that when they hear this name? The first thing everyone thinks of when they hear Genesis is the first book in the Bible. I know this isn't always the truth, but this is what a lot of people will think after they hear this name.

Sounds and looks ugly. Sorry, my opinion.

Genesis sounds lovely. I view it as a completely feminine name. A cute nickname would be Genie. :) A great alliterative sibset would be Genesis and Gemini (in that order so that Genesis is born first and Gemini is the second sibling who makes them a pair). Similar nicknames would be Genna and Gemma. The fact that Genesis is the name of a biblical book does make it seem a bit strange as a name because most people associate "Genesis" with just the book and don't think of it as a person's name. Then again, Mathew, Mark, Luke, John, Timothy, Titus, and Jude are all great names for real people. The name has been gaining significant popularity in the U.S. I predict that its popularity will continue to rise and that people will eventually stop viewing "Genesis" as a strange name.
My daughter's name is Genesis. I have not once heard anything negative about her name until I came on this site. It's sad to see people express themselves the way they do about names. She gets many compliments on a daily basis and she happens to love it. We are Christians and the name has great meaning to us. It took my husband and I 3 years to have a child. We found this to be a perfect name for her. If I had to do it again I would give her the same.
My name is Genesis Bishop, and I'm 34 yrs old. At first glance it may, as it has to many, appear that my parents were religious fanatics, but this is far from the truth. I was my parents first child and therefore a new "beginning" for them. I also have several middle names. My names all have meaning for both my parents and myself. I love and admire my parents for choosing my name despite the criticism it garnered at the time they chose it. I take pride in my name and try to live my life being a new, positive beginning for those in my life including my 2 week old son. To clear the matter of religion playing a roll, my father is an atheist and also the one who picked out my name - not in spite of injury to the Christian religion, but out of respect of a word and its meaning. I have never encountered the harshness displayed on this site toward the name and encourage all those considering choosing it to listen to your heart. That's where your child's name should come from, not the wagging tongues of trolls or trend setters trying to sway your gut feelings. ;)
Has anyone ever heard of a song by Jorma Kaukonen called 'Genesis'? It's one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and is probably one non-Biblical reason for the popularity of the name. If non-Christians were naming their children after something meaningful in their religion, would we be bashing them? Why the haters?
This is my name and I love it! I am very happy that my parents named me Genesis! It is very pretty and will definitely get you noticed! People always say how beautiful and unique it is. Christian or not. I've never been teased for it, only admired. To be honest this website is the first time I've seen someone not like it! Guess only internet people would cruelly judge a perfectly great name! Ps. I want to be a vet, not a stripper ;P not sure why you would assume that. So can you disagree people open up and give it a chance? The things you say might actually hurt someone! Peace =^w^=
The fact this is actually among the most popular girls' names in the US makes me frown. It's as bad as the hicks who name their kids stuff like Nevaeh. Because, you know, it's heaven backwards, did you notice?! So clever! So symbolic! What a deep meaning! Seriously, get over yourselves. You can pick a "unique" name for your kid without looking like tacky trash, plus it's really not unique when it's in the top 50 and everyone in the trailer park has a baby Genesis. Trust me, you DO look like someone who collects welfare/dropped out of high school when you name your kid Genesis. Why don't you name your next kid Exodus? Or you can name them Rush! Make a theme of naming your kids after prog-rock bands if you're not religious! UTTER TRASH.

My first born, my daughter's name is Genesis. She is my 'begining'. I love her name because it is uncommon, however, not unheard of. Yes, so there is a car model 'Genesis' and a game system 'Genesis'. Will she get made fun of in grade school?.. possibly. But I will instill in her the meaning of her name and why it is so special. She will educate the children who make fun of her. She will hold her head high when her teacher calls her name.
My name is Genesis. My mom didn't pick it out exclusively because of its religious connotation but because it means the beginning and I am her first born. I'm very proud of my name because it is unique and meaningful. Sure it may be strange but it's not a name one tends to forget.
The only possible reason I can think for this name being popular is that the super-religious tend to procreate more, and have all decided to name their poor children the same name for some reason.

I'll just say I was absolutely shocked beyond belief that this is in the top 100 in the US. And not in a good way.

By far not the best name in the world, but I don't think it's the worst, either. I do think it's rather nice that the parents want a name with religious connections, but seriously, Genesis sounds incredibly immature and tacky, and I doubt she'll thank you for it in the future.
I'm not super-religious, but I do love this name. I think I'd use it on a character rather than a real person, personally, but if you want to name your child this, more power to you!
In my opinion I love this name! It's the best book of the bible you could use for a name! I only like it for a girl & I know a little girl named Genesis, and it fits her perfectly. This name has definitely grown on me=)
I like it! But only in countries other than Greece. In Greece, this name is never used.

Personally, I like this name. I like the flow and the "s" at the end adds a bit of elegance. Whether or not you are Christian, I think this name and its meaning are both lovely. And to the person above who questioned the use of Books as names and mentioned Deuteronomy, I like that as a name, too. :)
I agree with the poster who wrote that naming a child Genesis seems pretentious, and that the name itself seems overly religious in tone. What is most bizarre is those who claim that they 'just like the name' and are not religiously motivated. Genesis = Bible = religious parents. This isn't an association you can shake off.
This is another name I'm surprised to find on the Top 1000. The only real person I can picture this name on is a fortune teller or astrologer or something. It sounds silly on someone who's not using it as a stage name, the type of name I wouldn't even use on a pet.
Genesis makes me think cheesy 70s prog-rock band, it sounds like 'Jenny's sis' and it looks like 'Gene's sis'. Also, the meanings aren't great. 'Birth' and 'beginning' seem more than a little redundant on a new-born baby, and really weird on an adult. Religious folks - if you want to choose a name from the Bible, try actually reading it, and you will find hundreds of long lists of actual names in it that are far nicer and more appropriate for a real person.

I happen to like this name quite a bit--there are some pretty biblical names, like Genesis and Hannah. And then there are some really odd ones like Beulah and Puah.Sadly, in the case of my stepsister, she knew a case where this name lead to an odd biblical name. She knew a couple who had twins, and they named the twins Genesis and Revelations. I kid you not.So, if you like biblical/"Godly" names, more power to you. Just be careful.

While I'm all for original names, this one is just way too out there for me. Not only is it ugly, it leaves a bad impression on people when they hear it. People will just assume that this poor child comes from some extreme religious family, regardless of whether you are religious or not. Just remember that while you might like this name, your poor child is the one who has to live with it, at least until she’s old enough to change it. Why subject her to childhood teasing for nothing. Please don’t name your child this. It’s just awful.
Well I think that Genesis is a beautiful name & even consider using it if I have a girl. And for those of you who say that everyone will assume that someone with this name comes from a family of religious freaks or whatever you think, that is just silly. And assuming something about a person based on their name is shallow and stupid. I don't think I've ever thought anything more of someone just by hearing their name other than "that's a pretty name" or "I've never really heard that one before" or "ewww, what were your parents thinking". Oh, and by the way I am not religious at all, so that blows the whole religious freak fam preconception (in my case anyway).
I think this name is a very beautiful, unique name for a girl that happens to be the firstborn baby to a couple; its meaning of birth, creation, and beginning perfectly fits that situation.
Sure, it means "birth", but I really don't think that "Genesis" works on any level; it's pretentious, overtly religious in tone (which makes me uncomfortable about it as a name), overbearing and gives unrealistic pressure to the bearer (what if the girl is ostracized because people will think that her family is a bunch of lunatic religious fundamentalists?). And what will we name our children next? Deuteronomy? Exodus? Leviticus? Qur'an? Salat? Zakaat? Shahadah? Ramadan? Veda? Brahmana? Torah? Talmud? Kabbalah? What next?
I really hate this name. I hate religion and most Biblical names (there are a meager few, but this one is not included in that meager few). Even if I were a blunt, conservative, fundamentalist Christian, I think that I'd choose a namesake for my child that isn't a book, but an actual character. On another note, the first image that comes to my mind when I hear this word (or name) is Sonic the Hedgehog and that old Sega video gaming console which shares this name.

Well first of all that is my name. I am currently 16. And for all you who said that parents pick this name based on their religion, it is not true. My parents chose this name because they liked it not because of religion. My friends all like it too.

This is my name. I am now 17 and I am happy my parents named me this because you don't hear this name that often and my friends love it and think it's very pretty.
It boggles the mind that there are people so naive that they say, with a straight face, that they ''just like the sound'' of this name. Look, this is a book in the Bible, it's the story of the creation of the world in the Bible, and EVERYONE that knows anything about Christianity knows that. The name will immediately bring that story to mind, and people will assume you picked it for your child as a statement of your faith. It doesn't make you sound very, ahem, scientifically literate, and that goes for your child, who will be assumed to come from a family of fundamentalist wackos.
I think this name sounds terrible. It reminds me of a stripper's name. "Welcome to the center pole Genesis!" On a more serious note, some things just shouldn't be names. If a biblical name is wanted, try something like Ruth. And for the above poster, who said something along the lines of it's cute for a little girl, just remember, the child will grow up and who is going to take a grown woman or elderly woman named Genesis seriously.
This name reminds me of the "Jena Six" case in Jena, Louisiana. But, this website has a lot of Caucasians so no one probably knows what I'm talking about.
It is ignorant to say that since this site is mostly frequented by Caucasians, then nobody has ever heard of the Jena Six. How do you know that most of the users on this site are Caucasian? Talk about prejudice.Furthermore, I know lots of Hispanic Catholics who use this name. In fact, I think of this as more of a Hispanic import, so to the person who said that this name is proof of an Evangelical take over, I think that that was a bit of a sweeping generalization.
I, for one, love this name. Who cares if it's the name of a book in the bible or rising in popularity? It's a cute name for a cute little girl, I think.
If people name their child Genesis, are there any children named Deuteronomy? Or Exodus?

That would just be ridiculous. *shakes head*. On another note, I do love this name. I am planning on naming my next child this. My husband and I are both very religious, but have sadly run out of Biblical names that we like and won't be made fun of. Genesis would be a good fit into our family.

I really don't like this name. At least call your child Genny if you name her this.
I didn't like this name for a person at first, but now that I think about it I really do like it. It sounds like an intelligent girl, maybe the first born. It should only be used if the child will know its significance.

I like the meaning, and the fact that it is related to my religion. I like Genesis for a boy or girl.
This sounds like a weird name for a person. I mean, it's the first book in the Bible! Plus it means 'birth' or 'beginning', so it's a weird meaning for a person's name, too. By the way, Anonymous User 11/27/2005, True Religion supports scientific progress.

Have to say that this name is OK, because I first thought that this name was completely made up like Nevaeh, but then I began to like it because my four year old sister REALLY wants another sibling, and if things go her way, she plans on nameing the baby Genesis, boy or gril! That's good cause everone in my family likes it!
This is my niece's name and ironically I think "Las Vegas stripper" when I hear it.

The rise of this name in popularity is a sad reflection of fundamentalist Christianity taking over America. No doubt parents are giving their children this perfectly ridiculous name to be spiteful toward scientific progress.

I have really begun to like this name! I love the sound it makes when it is said, and I like the look of it on paper. The sudden popularity of "Genesis" is, in my opinion, wonderful! Not only do I love the name, but I am glad for the name being religiously motivated (if you know what I mean). Dear anonymous user: Religion does not hinder scientific progress. And this name doeas not necessarily mean that people are becoming more religously aware, sad to say. Names catch on for whatever reason. And this name is a good one.
I think this is a great name as it means "birth" and the beginning/start of something new. Sadly, there are those (IMO igonorant people) who feel that it is ridiculous for people to name their children names that are connected to their own religious beliefs!
