This is specifically a diminutive of John in the Lapurdian variety of Basque, influenced by the verb "to go" ("joan" in Standard Basque, "gan" in Lapurdian Basque, thus *Joanis ➔ Ganix). It was revived in the 1980's and it has since been used all across the Basque Country.
