Foster as an English masculine given name does not necessarily have to be derived from one of the surnames Foster: it can also be a genuine given name, in which case it is derived from Vedastus, the name of a 6th-century French saint (who is also known as Vedast in English). He was venerated in England from the 10th century onwards.
