I saw a book of names once where the meaning of Floyd was wisdom.
Floyd means: gray; gray one; gray hair/haired. My grandpa's name, and the middle name of my cousin's son. Future first or middle name for my son. Not a bad name, sounds strong to me.
Many published sources refer to this name as of ancient Welsh descent, originally spelled in Wales "Llywd", and meaning "the gray". Many generations of my family have passed along this information. Because of presumed normal English phonetics, some of this family were called "Lide", and that version has stuck for generations. Flood, Lloyd, Floid, etc. are frequent variants, although Flood is more often Irish.
