Æbbe sounds like the Irish Abbán, another saint name. Both suggest to me a diminutive of "abbot" or "Abbess". If that is the meaning, it might have been a name taken as an adult, but conceivably, one could look at a baby girl and think "Little Abbess" fit her personality. "Ebba" seems like the common changing of the Anglo-Saxon Æ to E as happens in names such as Ædweard becoming Edward or Ælberht becoming Albert. I don't know, but that spelling change may have to come from the Norman French who adapted spelling conventions to be more like the Latin alphabet. The name also reminds me of the French term for priest: abbé, which comes from "father".
As far as I know, it means 'fortress of riches'.
