Actually it's probable that Daren was the original spelling of this as a first name and Darren was originally the variant. The full Social Security data shows that 1932 was the first year there were five or more Darens born in the United States, while 1936 was the first year there were five or more Darrens. Daren seems to have been created by the novelist Zane Grey for the main character in his book "Day of the Beast" (1922). Unlike most of his novels, this is not a Western but is instead the story of a soldier returning from World War I who is disturbed by what he sees as the moral decline of his home town. [noted -ed]
