Coined by Hungarian poet Mihály Vörösmarty for a male character in his epic poem 'Zalán futása' (1825). In 1839, however, Hungarian poet Péter Vajda adopted the name for a female character and dramatist and novelist Mór Jókai's usage of the name on female characters definitively established Dalma as a feminine name. The origin and meaning of the name are debated; current theories include a derivation from the dialectal word Dalma "stout, burly".http://www.nytud.hu/oszt/nyelvmuvelo/utonevek/osszesnoi.pdf
