Although "Christy" and "Christie" are common diminutives of Christopher in Ireland, "Críostóir" would be the direct translation of Christopher in the Irish language (Gaelge/Gaelic). [noted -ed]

I have also heard that it derives from a name or word meaning the light, or the light that is sent by God, hence Jesus being given the title Christ as in Jesus The Light That Is Sent By God.
