My name is Chanel and I love it. I'm always told how beautiful it is. My mum called me Chanel because it sounded nice with my middle name Leah, and has nothing to do with the brand at all. I'd hate to have an overused normal name!
It might be strongly associated with the brand, but it's still elegant and pretty. I really like it. And you can use the spelling Chanelle for a bit of a difference between the name and the brand.

Might be an okay name if it weren't for the brand Chanel, but in this day and age it's the equivalent of naming your child Gucci or Mercedes.

A name that somehow manages to be both trashy and pretentious at the same time. Gross.
Chanel is a nice name, and I love the puns about the word channel!. It's not like your child is going to get teased or anything. Also good for a finsta name on Instagram who's name is Chanel.
These comments about Chanel are rude and stupid. Chanel sounds very elegant and French and it is immediately associated with beauty and class, great qualities for a baby girl, and it is one of the best brands in the world for fashion. My mother named my sister Chanel and Prada myself because these were her favourite designer brands, that she always wanted and that she associated with beauty and elegance, that everybody loves and wanted for us names associated with great qualities for girls.
My name is Chanel! I've had nothing but great comments about my name all my life. People say it's beautiful! Someone even told me that they were going to name their daughter Chanel because they thought it was so elegant. I don't understand why people think it's so tacky! As a side note, my mother is a very accomplished fashion designer, so it's not as if she hadn't "done her research" or "didn't know" that the designer's real name was Gabrielle, as some people are suggesting. Sure it isn't your average name, but can't people appreciate its uniqueness?
These comments are very harsh, and quite offensive. I was named Chanel because I'm the fifth child in my family (Chanel n 5) and I'm glad I'm named Chanel, and not an ordinary name - the kinds of names you hear everyday. Many people calling this name "tacky" have an overused name, such as: Sarah, Amanda, Molly, Brianna, Brittney. I like names no one else has. Some may not think it's "unique" but not everyone is gonna run into a "Chanel" in their life, and I think that's cool.
I think Chanel is a beautiful name. Very smooth and in my opinion sounds very elegant. I don't see why you all think it's so trashy as a name but a nice name for a brand. The use of the name doesn't change the sound or meaning. Still very pretty.
After reading the above comments I have found more than a few that I wholeheartedly disagree with. My mother and father chose to name me Chanel, and it was most certainly not after any brand name or handbags! I was in fact named after the saint, St. Peter Chanel whose feast day is celebrated on April 28th. A person's class is established by their person and actions, not by their name!
I named my daughter Chanel Claire because I liked the way it sounds (and she was born in Europe) had zero to do with a brand name or status... some idiots on this thread.
Chanel is a surname, like oh gee let's see... Ashley, Hillary, Scott... the only difference is that it is usually surnames from Anglo origins (or their neighbors such as the Irish) that are put into use as first names and this one is French and attached to a popular brand name.
As my real name is Chanel, I find it offensive that people are calling my name tacky. I was born in a place where Chanel wasn't that well known and was given that name because my mother watched a movie about Gabrielle Chanel and decided that she liked the name. It wasn't because of the brand, it was about the person. I love my name since I haven't met many with the same name. To me it sounds quite elegant though I might not be that elegant myself... something to aspire to perhaps. I have met too many Sarah's, Emily's, Julie's, Lauren's... I like that my name is different.
I strongly dislike this name. I would expect Chanel's sisters to be named Destiny, Princess, and Nevaeh.

This name is just oh so tacky. Yes America let's name our children after a brand of purses. This is not a name that would suit a girl through her life. It stops being cute at about age 25. Then what? I hope she would at least have a classy middle name to turn to when she realizes how tacky being named Chanel is.
That it is. And 'kre8tyv' spellings like shanelle or channelle are even worse, you're just misspelling someone's surname. I was horrified to find this was at one time used in France, I thought they'd have better sense than that.

This is a brand name. It sounds tacky and trashy to name your daughter Chanel. And Coco Chanel isn't exactly the best namesake.
This name is trashy and ugly. It's one letter away from "channel". I don't get why people name their kids after brands they can't afford, like this one. Plus it means pipe, and it has inspired spellings such as Chanelle/Shanelle.
I'm sorry but this is not sophisticated. It's a classy brand but sounds so trashy when used as a name. So many people naming their daughter this because it's classy? No. Your child is not a handbag. Not really unique. People can do better. I agree with the comment saying you should call your daughter Gabrielle if you love Coco Chanel so much. But people strangley enough want their child associated with an expensive brand. This doesn't give you immediate style and make you look classy on first impression when learning your name.
