I wonder where the information that the surname meant "pipe" comes from. My "Noms et Prenoms de France" by Dauzat says it either is a diminutive of "chane", a word for "wine jug", or, if from the region of Ain, means "channel" or "canal". [noted -ed] I suppose those meanings might be related to the idea of a pipe that carries water, but I'd like to know the source for that. [I don't have a note of the source, but I suspect it was a misinterpretation of Old French chenal/Latin canalis -ed]
