Often, people pronounce my name like Cell-ya as in a cell. Xaxax it's really funny when I have to correct them, but it's annoying also because people often assume my name is Cecilia, no. It's not, pretty name though!
In Ireland and Scotland it has two syllables- Seal-ya. The English add an extra one- Seal-ee-ya. I like my name when it’s pronounced the way it was given to me, but dislike it said the English way with the extra syllable- it sounds too posh and prissy ;) I find I sometimes have to repeat my name several times for someone- “Seal-ya” and then someone goes...”ohhhh...you mean Seal-eeeeeeeeee-ya!”. No. I don’t. :)
My name is Celia. Mine is supposed to be pronounced as "sel yah" but most people pronounce it as "seel yah". I used to correct people when they mispronounced it, but I don't anymore. Eventually I got used to "seel yah". FYI, there's a poem by Ben Jonson called "Song to Celia":Song: to Celia [“Drink to me only with thine eyes”] BY BEN JONSONDrink to me only with thine eyes, And I will pledge with mine; Or leave a kiss but in the cup, And I’ll not look for wine. The thirst that from the soul doth rise Doth ask a drink divine; But might I of Jove’s nectar sup, I would not change for thine.I sent thee late a rosy wreath, Not so much honouring thee As giving it a hope, that there It could not withered be. But thou thereon didst only breathe, And sent’st it back to me; Since when it grows, and smells, I swear, Not of itself, but thee.
