Catala (or variants like "Cathala", "Catalan" or even "Cathalo") is an Occitan name, relatively common in the south of France. It is an ethnic name, simply meaning Catalan. It can designate someone with a distant Catalan ancestor in the Middle Ages, or possibly a link with Catalonia (a merchant for example). The links between Occitania and Catalonia being strong, it is not surprising to find such a name. There are also many “Catala” localities and hamlets.
