Variant English Pronunciation: kar-ə-LEE-nə.

I've never heard the name of the U.S. states accented on the first syllable and I'm American. Maybe that's the case in some local dialect(s), but in my experience, it's accented on the third syllable. The vowel in the first syllable varies according to the famous "marry, merry, Mary" distinction. As an easterner (New York), I pronounce it with the vowel of "marry."

I have a friend named Carolina. She’s Hispanic and it's pronounced care-uh-lee-nah.

I'm Mexican and there are a lot of girls with the name 'Carolina'. It's pronounced with the 'R' rolled but most people can't roll their 'R's.

Carolina is not pronounced kahr-o-LEE-nah, but Kah-roh-LEE-nah in Spanish.

Personally I think this name sounds better when the 'i' is pronounced 'e' CAR-O-LE-NA. That's usually how it's said in Spanish.

In America, the pronunciation KER-o-lien-a is reserved for the state. If it's someone's name, we usually say ker-o-LIEN-a or ker-o-LEEN-a. [noted -ed]

The American states are pronounced ker (or kair) -o-LIE-nah.
