There's a town in California called Carmel-by-the-Sea, sometimes shortened to just Carmel, about 4 miles south of Monterey. My parents lived in Monterey for a few years in the 80s and my mom would visit Carmel often. When she talks about it, she pronounces it as KAHR-mehl. It's a beautiful town and a beautiful name.
