My name is Buffy (not a nickname) I was born in 1978 and named after a cat. Yes a CAT. While I have had similar experiences to what other Buffy's have mentioned on here (everyone has had a pet named Buffy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, blond cheerleader, childish name, etc. ) I would never let those experiences define or change who I am. Every kid gets bullied in grade school, but after that no one cares! Your name could be Jane and they would call you Jane candy cane. Anyway, just for the record I love my name. I would never change it to something else, or feel ashamed of it. It's unique! I've honestly never met another real Buffy in my real life and once I looked up my first and last name and found out I am the only person in THE ENTIRE WORLD with this name. That's better than 8 million Elizabeth Smith's out there.
I'm a Buffy! My mother was a hippie who loved Buffy St Marie the folk singer. I hated my name as a kid and would always pretend to be a Stacey. As an adult I embrace the gift of this name! Buffy!
I was named Buffy Marie after Buffy Saints Marie, a 60s folk singer. I was born in 73. I have lied about my name many many times growing up and really hated my name pretty much my entire life. I do not recommend this name to anyone even considering it.
Buffy and Xena are 2 guilty pleasure names, names that I wouldn’t give to my children, but are still nice. I thought both shows, while cheesy, were still good shows and had strong, and developed female characters. Overall, I like both. Xena sounds pretty even if a little edgy and Buffy works as an affectionate nickname.
My name is Elizabeth and I named my first cat Buffy. I was 6. I guess I named her after myself. I still love the name Buffy.

I remember when I first heard of Buffy the Vampire Slayer I thought that it was about a clown who hunted zombies. It's a good show, but that's not the impression you want a name to give.

I think Buffy is an awesome name for someone with the confidence to have it! Especially if your full name is Elizabeth, Buffy is a fun way to shorten it. I like it!
I too am a Buffy, real name Elizabeth. However, I have been called Buffy since birth. Not that hard to see how you come up with Buffy from Elizabeth. Eliza"buff" to Buffy. I have NEVER been called Elizabeth, and cringe whenever anyone tries to call me that. I hate Elizabeth. I have never been teased about my name, the show made it interesting for a while, but very rarely do people refer to the show anymore when they first meet me, as they know I have heard it to death. People are used to unique names these days, and as far as unique names, Buffy isn't that unusual or unique. I have never had issues using Buffy in a professional context either.

I love the name Buffy and I love the tv show.

Haha, okay, I can admit this name is silly. But I adore it, mostly because of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's cute! I wouldn't ever use it as a straight-up given name, but if I ever named a daughter Elizabeth, it'd probably be on the nickname list...(we're big on nicknames in my family, everyone has several). Buffy is a pretty b.a. character to be named for!

I like the name Buffy because it is unique and when it is mentioned you know exactly whom its referring to, no last name needed. I think the name fits the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and character very well because, like the character and the show, the name is not what you would expect. The show seems very silly at first but once you watch it and get into it for a while you realize what an awesome show it really is. Anyone can knock the name or the show but usually those are people who have never watched the show before. And it was not a short-lived tv show, it was on for seven seasons, which for me was all through middle school and high school, that is not a short time.

I actually really like this name, if I had a friend named Elizabeth I would probably call them Buffy. I see a lot of people don't really understand how this comes from Elizabeth so I will try to explain: This comes from a baby's pronunciation of the name. If you asked a child to say Elizabeth, chances are they would say "Elizabeff" or "Elizabuff". Thus creating the nickname "Buffy". I hope this was helpful!
I absolutely love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I wouldn't ever name anyone this. Joss Whedon himself (the creator of BtVS) has said that he chose the name 'Buffy' so that it would sound silly and not badass (for lack of a better word), to contrast with the actual traits of the character Buffy, which I think is quite clever and fits in with the themes of the show (little blonde girl kills monster instead of monster kills little blonde girl like expected.) So when you first hear the name Buffy, it sounds stupid, but don't judge a book by its cover ;)
I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I would use Buffy as a nickname for Elizabeth, however, I don't think it would be taken seriously as a given name.

This name is some sort of... I don't know, I can't explain it. But I really like this name, it's not like pretty or anything, but it seems somewhat strong. I don't know, I'll never even consider naming my child Buffy, but I don't necessarily dislike it either.
I really don't like this name. I've never watched the show, I think Sarah Michelle Gellar is a terrible actress, and it just simply sounds bad as a name.
I have a student in one of my classes that goes by Buffy. Her real name is Rionne and the nickname doesn't suit her in the least. I think she just wanted a more girly sounding name.
Buffy: Honey, we need to talk about the invitations. Now, do you wanna be William the Bloody, or just Spike? ‘Cause, either way, it's gonna look majorly weird. Spike: Where as the name Buffy gives it that touch of classic elegance. Buffy: What wrong with my name? My mother gave me that name. Giles: Such a good question. Spike: Right your mother. Buffy: Don’t you start in on my mother!Sorry, I just had to put that in. I adore Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But I have to agree with Spike about her name - it does sound infantile, and it's not the name I would have picked for a character like Buffy.

Pathetic, infantile, and doesn't sound very professional. Besides, I quite dislike Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
*cough cough* excuse me? Buffy? Seriously, what kind of name is that? Who would want to name their child *cough cough* Buffy? No offense to all you Buffys.
This name just doesn't sound right. It almost sounds as if someone was trying to say something after a root canal, biting their tongue, or with a full mouth. The name isn't very pretty, and it sounds very childish on a grown-up. A chubby girl with this name might be called ''puffy Buffy''.
I think this is a sweet, tender nickname for Elizabeth. I wouldn't use it independently as a given name, but I think it's a cute option for close friends & family to use. Very British.

I don't think it's a very pretty name for a girl. Plus, the show is so well-known that that's what everyone would think of when hearing the name.
It is explained on the previous page how Buffy comes from Elizabeth. It's a small childs way of saying Beth or Bethy because the 'th' sound is hard for very small children to manage. It's like my neice calling her dog 'shoopy' instead of 'snoopy.'

Not a pleasant sounding name, and too much like 'buff.' Elizabeth has probably more nicknames than any other common English name (I know it's not English in origin, but it's English), so pick one of those instead. I knew a dog named Buffy, and I think it works best as a dog name.

Whoever has this name will eventually be made fun of. This is a horrible name because it makes me think of a wrestler.
This name is just plain ugly. It sounds like the name of a dim witted person, and why anyone would name their child this is beyond me. This is a name for a pet, not a person.
Vampire slayer or not, I really dislike Buffy (no offense). It just sounds more like a dog's name than a human.

Personally, I love the name Buffy, and that has nothing to do with the vampire slayer. The cat that my nan left me is named Buffy and I think it really suits her.
Curse commercialism! All these names portrayed on TV could possibly be loved if it weren't for TV! Buffy just isn't a good name for a child when we see it as a vampire slayer. Unless your family's in that business... ha.
