I'm the third generation of Blaines in my family. My grandfather was named for James G. Blaine, "The Gentleman from Maine", who ran for President against Grover Cleveland in 1884. For some reason my great-grandfather named all his sons after famous Republicans, even though his father fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War.Anyway, if you look at the historical popularity of this name, that's why it spikes in 1884. And yeah, the name was a real burden when I was a kid, but these days folks think I'm from the New England gentry, instead of a hillbilly from West Virginia!
