This is a family name for me and I really like it. Everybody can pronounce it first try (in Britain at least) and it has some cute associations, such as Barney the purple dinosaur. That's the thing though: everyone I know who has had this name has inevitably gone by Barney- probably because it takes less effort to say- so if you plan to use it that's maybe something to consider.
My husband was named Barnaby. J. He hated the name his whole childhood but he’s now 46 years old and says he’s thankful to have it! It’s one of a kind even though we live in a big city there’s only one Barnaby aka Barn :) our entire family has unique names. We are laid back and my husband is the sweetest man, hard blue collar worker. But like he said it took him 47 years to finally like his name! Lol his father wanted to name him Marven or Barnaby and when we asked him why?, he then said it would toughen him up?! Lol my poor hubby, smh.
I wouldn't use it. It sounds like a geeky kid's name to me. That, or the name of some old, cranky guy. Besides, the kid would be called Barney. Who wants their son's nickname to remind people of barns and the drunk from the Simpsons?
