Colonel The Honourable Aubrey Nigel Henry Molyneux Herbert DL (1880–1923) was a British soldier, diplomat, traveler, and intelligence officer associated with Albanian independence. He was twice offered the throne of Albania. From 1911 until his death he was a Conservative Member of Parliament. His eldest half-brother was George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon (1866–1923). Herbert was in his own right a considerable Orientalist, and a linguist who spoke French, Italian, German, Turkish, Arabic, Greek, and Albanian as well as English.
Famous bearer: Abba Even - Israeli diplomat, ambassador to the USA and the UN - born Aubrey Solomon Eban.I could never think of this name as anything but masculine.
In Gail Carson Levine's critically acclaimed novel "Ella Enchanted", one of Prince Char's companions is a knight called Aubrey. I myself adore this name for a boy to bits!
Aubrey was used by Dodie Smith for the name of a male character in her charming novel "I Capture the Castle." A famous bearer was artist Aubrey Beardsley, also male. I am dismayed that some people think of the name Aubrey as "all-girl." Utterly, utterly dismayed.
I have just read a book by Georgette Heyer called 'Venetia' (read it, it is excellent) and the main character's brother is by the name Aubrey and I must agree with the last comment that I am dismayed that some people think it a girl's name! It was quite masculine!
