Meaning and History:
Derived from the medieval Turkic noble title of atabeg, which in turn is derived from Old Turkic ata meaning "father, ancestor" (compare Ata 1) combined with Old Turkic beg meaning "chieftain, master". The latter word was also used as a title of its own, but then in the military.
Since the people in modern Turkic countries like Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan frequently combine an existing given name with the aforementioned military title of beg, it is quite possible that there are instances where this name is such a combination. The name used in the combination would then be the Arabic name Ata 2, since Arabic names are often used due to Islam being the dominant religion in these countries.
A notable bearer of this name was the Armenian writer Atabek Khnkoyan (1870-1935), who wrote under the pseudonym Khnko Aper.
