I am a woman, this is my name, and the way I explain the correct way to say it is like the letters βR-E-L.β I was born approximately 8 months before the Disney movie came out, so my whole life people have been correcting my pronunciation π€¦π½ββοΈ. It is Hebrew in origin, meaning βLion of God,β and has been used in the bible as a name for Jerusalem. The Little Mermaid made me hate my name as a child, but now Iβve grown to love its origin, as well as its correct pronunciation.
The name Ariel is pronounced AIR-ee-ELLE and spelt Ariel not pronounced AH-re-YAL and spelt Areille.

I am learning Hebrew, so I have a decent grasp of the alef-bet. Hebrew (EE-vreet), is always horribly translated. Phonetically, it is pronounced ay-REE-al or AY-ree-AL. With the 'R' a tongue-roll r, like in Spanish. I think it is a lovely name, suitable for boys or girls. I wish "the little mermaid" did not pop into people's minds though.
In response to MiryamChannah, the Hebrew pronunciation is a-ree-EL. βAβ as in cat, βreeβ as in free, βelβ as in bell. But yes, the R is rolled.

I'm an Israeli and this Jewish HEBREW name is pronounced Are-ee-elle. The "mermaid" totally ruined this other wonderful boy name.

People often call me Ar-yul. It is pronounced Ar-ee-ELL (Like air-ee-elle). I despise any reference to mermaids.

In English, the name Ariel is pronounced, 'air-ee-ul.' In Hebrew, French or Spanish, Ariel is pronounced R-E-L. Just like the names, David, Leah or Sarah. These are pronounced differently in English than they are in some other languages, even though the spelling stays the same.

Commonly pronounced "AH-ree-el" with "AH" as in back. I've only heard it pronounced AH-ree-el with AH as in father in the Disney movie The Little Mermaid.
