I'm British and my name is Anja, pronounced ANN-YAH. My main bugbear is the common mistake people in my country make pronouncing it as ANN-JAH. Even at my graduation. But what can you do?
My youngest is named Anja, and sadly the other commenter was correct about English pronunciation rules/lack thereof. Such a beautiful name! But hacked to bits. Of course, no one here speaks Scandic/Germanic languages, so if you're in America and are thinking about Anja, consider Anya or Ania.
Ah-yah is correct. If you want to pronounce it ah-jah then spell it an?a.
