Derived from the Greek noun ἄναξ (anax) meaning "master, lord, chief". In ancient Greece, it was a title denoting a tribal king or military leader.In Greek mythology, Anax was a giant. He was the son of Uranus and Gaia, and father of Asterius. He was king of the town and territory Anactoria ("place of Anax"), which was later seized by a Cretan who killed Asterius and renamed the city Miletus after himself.Anax was also an epithet of the Greek gods in general, characterizing them as rulers of the world.
