Ambrose Dexter is a character in H. P. Lovecraft's short story "The Haunter of the Dark" and Robert Bloch's sequel "The Shadow from the Steeple". In the former, Dr. Dexter throws the Shining Trapezohedron, a mysterious stone contained in a box which was found in the steeple of the abandoned church, "into the deepest channel of Narragansett Bay." In the latter, the darkness at the bottom of the bay allows Nyarlathotep to possess Dr. Dexter, who then becomes a nuclear physicist involved with developing nuclear weapons.
