My name is Alvina, pronounced with a long I. 98% of the time it is mispronounced using the ee version even after I say the proper enunciation people will continue to pronounce it as Alveena. No matter how many times I correct them they usually revert to Alveena. So I no longer even bother with corrections I answer to either way it is pronounced. If someone apologizes for pronouncing it incorrectly I just respond with "no worries most everyone does so I consider it also my name." So, yes I love my unique name and would love to see it used more often, but if you choose this beautiful name teach your child to smile and enjoy all the fun others get trying to pronounce and remembering the name. I used nick names like Al, Allie, Alvie. And yes get used to being compared to Elvira Mistress of the Dark, and learn the words to the Oak Ridge Boys song "Elvira" ommpoppamowmow!
This is a beautiful, unique name. It's one of those girl names that ages well. I certainly wouldn't mind if this was my name. :) Interestingly, I've heard this name also has Arabic origins (written as الوينا), though not I'm entirely sure if this is true and if so, what exactly is the Arabic meaning.

I prefer the pronunciation al-VEE-na, personally.

This is my middle name. My mother named me after a favorite uncle whose middle name was Alvin. She pronounced it Al-vye-na, which I greatly prefer over Al-vee-na. I do get people calling me Elvira instead, and singing the Oak Ridge Boys popular 1980's song to me, not fun.
