Usages: Ancient Greek, Greek Mythology
Derived from the Greek adjective ἀλκηστής (alkestes) meaning "valiant, brave, courageous", which is ultimately derived from the Greek noun ἀλκή (alke) meaning "strength".
NOTE: technically, ἀλκηστής (alkestes) is a noun that consists of ἀλκή (alke) combined with the Greek suffix -της (-tes), which forms nouns that represent a state of being. However, nearly all sources that provide a meaning for the word treat it as if it were an adjective. Also compare names like Akestes (submitted) and Orestes (main; see the comment section).
