I think this name is really pretty. I like both pronunciation, but I think I like An-yes a bit more. The name isn't only for old ladies. The little girl in Despicable Me was named Agnes, Ag-nis.
It's not an ugly name. Its French pronunciation makes it really beautiful, but in English it's just average, not ugly. And for me there are no 'old' names... after all, 60 years from now all the Jaydens and Braylees will be grandparents, right?Reminds me of Agnès Mellon, French soprano and founder of the Ensemble Barcarole. Strongly recommended.
I love the name Agnes, it makes me sad that so many of you don't like it or think its an "old lady's name." The name Agnes is beautiful, and so is Agnès, pronounced ahn-YES!

The French pronunciation is really nice! The English makes me think of old ladies.
My mother's name is MARIE-AGNÈS and she is French. But since she lives in the USA everyone calls her Agnes (English pronunciation). I prefer the French pronunciation and I think that it sounds much better with Marie.
I am an "old lady" (54 yrs. proud) and I have a young friend who is so embarrassed that her first name is Agnes that she has sworn me to secrecy. This is a travesty, and those of you who would judge or insult a person's name are thoughtless, hurtful people with too much time on your hands. Saint Agnes died a martyr, she died for something she believed in. How many of you would do the same. No matter what your name is, your parents bestowed it upon you because they loved you upon first sight, and gave it to you for what it meant to them.
