I believe there is one more alternative spelling - AHLHEID. I found it in an 1842 birth record in Osten, Lower Saxony (at the time, Kingdom of Hannover).

Considered old fashioned in the Netherlands as well. 'Adel' means 'nobel' (in the sense of nobility), in Dutch.
