The meanings of Japanese name mainly stand on the pronunciation less on the kanji.
Taro is Japanese name which means "first child". And sometimes it is used in combination with other word such as Ryotaro, Shotaro.
-ta is abbreviation of -taro. Ryotaro described as Ryota, Shotaro becomes Shota.
This abbreviation happens to other sequential name. Jiro which means second child is described as -ji, Third child Saburo is -zo, and so on.
2nd Jiro 次郎 or 二郎 ex.進次郎>進次 Shinjiro>Shinji "progressive second child"
3rd Saburo 三郎 ex.晋三郎>晋三 Sinzaburo>Shinzo "proceeding third child"
5th Goro 五郎 ex.大五郎>大五 Daigoro>Daigo "big fifth child"
6th Roku 六郎 ex.甚六郎>甚六 Jinrokuro>Jinroku "enormous sixth child"
7th Shichi 七郎 ex.弥七郎>弥七 Yashichiro>Yashichi "expanding seventh child"
8th Hachi 八郎 ex.喜八郎>喜八 Kihachiro>Kihachi "pleasant eighth child"
4th Shi 四郎, 9th Kyu 九郎 and 10th Ju 十郎 I think abbreviation of these is not so common.
11th Yoichi 与一郎>与一 yoichiro>yoichi
