Editors and there sources
I have been recently wondering this question as a lot of websites have accurate and legit info about certain names and there meaning yet when I submit that name with the same meaning as many other websites onto the "user-submitted names" it usually says "name not found" in my notifications after I submit it. So I just want to inquire about where some of the editors get there sources and resources from? Not sure if this is a regional thing since websites could provide different info based on the languages but I am very curious as why that's happening since majority of websites mention the same thing so how could that be so unjustified that it can't make it into the user-submitted names? Thanks in advance.

I am rereading what you wrote and I don't understand if you mean that a name isn't in the database yet when you try to submit it? If thats what you mean, there are millions of names and not every name is in the main database yet. Its run by one man with a handful of editors and everyone wants to be sure about the background before submitting it as a legitimate names. There are some names with a boatload of evidence that have taken YEARS to be added to the main database.
Yes, I understand that it takes a long time for a user-submitted name to get added to the main-database, but I am taking about the user-submitted base, run by editors.
Unfortunately, unless you are an editor you cannot see the breadth of the user-submitted database. Its likely there, you just can't see it.
What names did you put that are deleted? I probably can tell why.
I do not know how much these help, I mostly do Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian names, but here are sources:
– wikipedia (find person with name, sometimes there is name pages with meanings)
– ridni (ukraine data)
https://ridni.org/karta/ - surnames
https://ridni.org/forenames/ - forenames
In Ukrainian but I think that they have English version
– random documents / books with names on them
– news articles with names in them

It was a name a submitted a while back so I do not necessary have the name at the top of my head but there was more than enough resources to prove that it was a real name, if you searched it up you would've found many sites that said the same root/meaning of it. Thank you also for mentioning a few of your sources you use, are they underground name websites or are they pretty common websites in your region? Also just another quick question (I know it may be different on your end), but are these the some of the websites you use to prove it's a real name or for meanings? Thanks!
I looked under your username in the submission database and you have only two names submitted. Calpus was submitted yesterday and is still in the submission database. Miramichi was submitted 2/4/2025 and it is still in the submission database but is listed under the place name website.
Do you mean you "searched" for the name or you "submitted" the name, because the two are different?

That's what I'm thinking. I think the name might’ve failed to submit just due to an error. Is this correct @aint_alessia? Did you submit the name but it failed, or did you *search* for the name instead?
Basically a while back, I anonymously submitted a name that had enough sources to prove that it was a real name by a basic Google search. But when I searched for it again, the name wasn't there and I checked my notifications to see an editor has removed it from the user-submitted names. So I was just confused as to why the name gotten deleted as there was enough references to prove it AND have usages/meanings of the name.
Unfortunately, without the name, because you submitted anonymously its difficult to know why it was deleted. Even with resources, names can be deleted if they are duplicates, already in the database, etc.
It mostly is for if it is real name, but wikipedia can be trusted for meaning- as person who has did work on wikipedia they have very strict guidelines...
Most of these sources are some of first things that will show up when searching in Russian / Ukrainian on Yandex Browser, so not obscure!
I forgot about this also

Okay that makes a lot of sense regarding proving if something is a real name or not. I usually submit forenames but I am having issues finding names that are actually proven to have meanings on them that are mostly rare.
Name does not have to have meaning to go on site, e.g names that are sound combinations (like Braxley).
You can write "meaning unknown" or leave this blank.

Alright, will make that a note for future reference. Thank you for being so helpful regarding user submissions.
It is not problem! :)
