Simon and Deborah with Henry
- Hastséoltoi with Ned, Frank, Oscar, August, and Elsie
-- Ned, Miriam, and Alta with Lottie, Silas, Sophie, and Jasper
-- Frank and Nina with Hiram, Eula, and Morris
-- Oscar and Lola
- Henry and Enid with Leslie and Wilbur
The last four years have been quite calm for the Lacey family, considering how things have been lately. Jack's former mistress, Lady Sadie, has passed away - an event to which Jack is unaware and unconcerned. Ned and Miriam are still unmarried, and they're quite happy that way. They've also opened their relationship to someone new: a woman their age named Alta Ledger. Alta is in a relationship with both Ned and Miriam. They all know of this and are quite happy about it. They hide it under the guise that they've hired Alta as a live-in maid, but beyond that they don't do much to hide their status, making them the object of much scandal and scorn from others. Ned and Miriam have had three more children since we last checked in on them, named Silas, Sophie, and Jasper. All four children call Alta "Mama Alta", and they love her very much, though Lottie is a little confused by the dynamic between Ned, Miriam, and Alta. Frank and Nina have welcomed their first children: two boys, Hiram and Morris, and a little girl named Eula. But now it's 1902, and things are going to change. At Ned's request, Jack travels with his family back to England to meet his uncle and grandmother. The married and engaged sons bring their beloveds along (including Alta). There, a terrible tragedy occurs - a tornado comes through, destroying Henry and Enid's home, where they were hosting, and killing Deborah, Jack, August's wife Josie, Andrew, and Henry and Enid's last remaining triplet, Victor. The event shakes the family. Hastséoltoi returns to her tribal community with little Elsie and relies on their support through her loss. August moves to a different city to try and escape the ghost of his beloved wife. Henry and Enid are, sadly, almost used to this. They know to lean on each other. Enid, always a superstitious young woman, has begun to think their family may be cursed and has begon regularly seeking the counsel of a spiritual medium. Though Henry disapproves, it's hard to deny his wife something that helps her cope. Ned and his family return to New Mexico shaken. Miriam and Alta make it very clear to Ned that none of it is his fault, but his guilt weighs heavy upon him. Still, he has to be there for his four young children, most of whom will likely not remember the traumatic event.
