The flirtatious Yvonne had secured the interest of many of the young men at court - Viktoria had to tell her off for teaching her slightly dowdy younger sister Helen how to talk to boys! In more worrying news, curious little Therese fell ill with a bad case of whooping cough this year, but luckily recovered.

When Helen fell pregnant this year, the entire family was shocked. Apparently, she had been having relations with her Latin teacher's son, Markus, for some time. This was not much expected from such a plain and studious girl! Advisors recommended that the boy be executed and the child sent to an orphanage, while Josef felt Helen should be allowed to marry the commoner and raise the child as royal. Viktoria, ever the moderate, gave Helen a choice - either marry Markus, but leave the court for good, or have the Latin teacher fired and never see Markus again, in which case Viktoria and Josef would pretend the child was there own. Helen, with a surprising resolve that reminded her parents of the girl's late namesake, dear Drottning Cajsa, said she would leave. She and Markus are now married and working in a small bookshop many miles from the capital city. Her parents miss her terribly, but they trust she is happy.

Olga sadly died this year. However, things were not all bad for Benjamin - having become close to the very pretty (though perhaps a little air-headed) Hertiginna Mia, his parents finally allowed them to marry. Though they had rather he secured a foreign affair, he is getting to the age where it is necessary for him to begin producing issue, as Viktoria so practically put it. Josef's view was simply that they were in love and ought to marry, something Benjamin heartily agreed with.

Unfortunately, Therese contracted sepsis after an injury she had contracted whilst Johanna was attempting to teach her to ride. She soon died, and although nobody blames Johanna, she herself feels incredibly guilty. Previously so iron-willed and mischievous, Johanna now spends most of her time alone with Rosa the cat.

When the palace fell into disrepair, the family stayed briefly at the home of Greve Thorvald Tobias, young and recently widowed of his sickly French wife, who had been sent only a year previously in an arranged marriage. Greve's passion is horse breeding, and after spending much time riding together, he and Johanna soon fell in love. Viktoria and Josef were very pleased - they thought the proud and unfeminine Johanna would never find a match. Indeed, she furiously denied that she was feeling any twinge of emotion, but when the Greve proposed with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, Johanna couldn't help but accept. When her family moved back into the main palace, Johanna stayed to marry Thorvald in an understated ceremony, after which they rode away on the white horses Viktoria and Josef had given them as a wedding present.
