King Edmund the Sorrowful - that's what his countrymen have taken to calling him. Tragedy continues to nip at the heels of the House of Northumbria, so much so that Edmund even altered the family crest. The lion emblazoned on the crest now sheds a single tear on its cheek.
There had been complications with the birth of the twin princesses. Little Mary and Amelia, though very tiny, had been healthy, but the difficulty had been on Queen Sapphira's side. An infection took her not long after their daughters turned six months old. Edmund was inconsolable. Sapphira had been the light of his life, and now he had to face ruling the kingdom without her steadiness and advice. Rumors swirled of the king's short reign being cursed, though no one knew what for. And the rumors only grew worse in the past year, when Margaret, Queen Mother, died suddenly as well. Her son and daughters, however, were not surprised at their mother's death. After King Ambrose had been lost in the Crusades, she had never been the same. Though she outlived her husband, her heart had withered long ago.
New, more delightful rumors, began to make their way around the kingdom in the past few months. King Edmund is now engaged to the Duchess Alice of Conteville. Edmund believed that he had mourned his wife long enough. The kingdom needed to see their sorrowful monarch joyful once again, and Charles, Mary, and Amelia needed a mother. Alice, the youngest daughter of a Duke, would not have been Queen Margaret's first choice for her son - she is rather plain, far from the most beautiful woman at court. But Edmund was charmed by Alice's wit and compassion, and the fact that she was one of the few single women in the kingdom who were not aggressively chasing after the title of Queen of England after Sapphira's death. Prince Charles is still wary of his soon-to-be stepmother, but Mary and Amelia adore her.
Philippa and Hugo have welcomed three more children into their family, making the court of Genoa very lively. To get some peace after the birth of Princess Grainne, she sent her two oldest, Florian and Crispin, off to visit their English cousins. As Florian will someday be king of Genoa, she wants him to develop a friendship with Charles, future king of England. Oriana whined at her brothers being allowed to visit family and her staying home, so Philippa sent her precocious daughter to visit Princess Beatrice and Prince Andrew. She and Hugo will retrieve the children when they travel to England for King Edmund's wedding to Duchess Alice.
Princess Beatrice was also deeply affected by Queen Sapphira's death, as the two women had grown very close after Beatrice and Andrew moved closer to the royal palace. She and Andrew have also hit more rocky times in their marriage, though they have kept their issues private for Edmund's sake. After the royal wedding, she and Andrew have agreed that she will take the children to their summer home and Andrew will remain in the capitol. She believes that a retreat to the country will do her mind good.
Of the two sisters who have moved away from England, Princess Victoria is the more homesick. She loves her husband dearly, but the King and Queen of Portugal are not the easiest in-laws, especially since England and Portugal have a bit of a history. Some of Prince Adrian's siblings were mortified that he had married an English royal rather than a Portuguese duchess that they had favored. But Victoria is doing her very best to work her way into the hearts of her new family, and to raise her little daughter well in the court of Portugal. She is grateful that Edmund's wedding will give her an excuse to take an extended trip to her homeland.
